Visual filling-in

چکیده

How is the blind spot filled in? The natural blind spot is a retinal region devoid of photoreceptors, where the head of the optic nerve joins the retina (Figure 1A). Close your left eye and extend your right arm straight in front of you. Spread your fingers wide, palm down, and gaze at your thumbnail. Now wiggle your little finger. It will fall on your blind spot and you will be unable to see it! The blind spot is quite large, about 6° in diameter — large enough to hold a dozen moons side by side. So it makes a big hole in the visual field — yet we do not see a hole. It is true that the retina of the other eye covers this area, but even with the other eye closed the area of the blind spot looks ‘filledin’ with the color or texture of the surround. If the surround is red or black or striped, then the region of the blind spot appears to be filled in with red or black or with stripes. Also, traumatic damage to the retina, or the slow degeneration caused by glaucoma, can result in a blind spot or scotoma: a scotoma is also perceptually filled-in, so effectively that the patient is often not aware of it, which can lead to undesirable delay in seeking medical treatment.

An illusion induced by an illusion – perceptual filling-in of coloured negative afterimages

Visual filling-in relates to a perceptual phenomenon in which a stimulus pattern apparently undergoes dynamic changes assuming an attribute such as colour, texture, or brightness from the surround. This perceptual completion effect has up to now been shown only for real images. Here, we present filling-in in negative afterimages, a phenomenon not yet reported. Using coloured disk-ring patterns ...

Dynamics of perceptual filling-in of visual phantoms revealed by binocular rivalry.

How do selective and constructive visual mechanisms interact to determine the outcome of conscious perception? Binocular rivalry involves selective perception of one of two competing monocular images, whereas visual phantoms involve perceptual filling-in between two low-contrast collinear gratings. Recently, we showed that visual phantoms lead to neural filling-in of activity in V1 and V2, whic...

Recovery from perceptual filling-in is gated by interocular matching

We examined how the binocular visual system behaves during perceptual filling-in. In these experiments an initial filled-in target was replaced with an interocularly matched (fusible) or unmatched (rivalrous) target immediately after the disappearance of the initial target induced by perceptual filling-in. We measured the times for the target to recover from the filling-in. We found that recove...

Finding out about filling-in: a guide to perceptual completion for visual science and the philosophy of perception.

In visual science the term filling-in is used in different ways, which often leads to confusion. This target article presents a taxonomy of perceptual completion phenomena to organize and clarify theoretical and empirical discussion. Examples of boundary completion (illusory contours) and featural completion (color, brightness, motion, texture, and depth) are examined, and single-cell studies r...

Predictive Coding: A Possible Explanation of Filling-In at the Blind Spot

Filling-in at the blind spot is a perceptual phenomenon in which the visual system fills the informational void, which arises due to the absence of retinal input corresponding to the optic disc, with surrounding visual attributes. It is known that during filling-in, nonlinear neural responses are observed in the early visual area that correlates with the perception, but the knowledge of underly...

Blindness Due to Hyaluronic Acid Filler Injection: A Case Report and Review of Literature

Purpose: To Report a case of blindness due to hyaluronic acid filler injection. Case Report: A 28-year-old female patient was referred to our clinic with complaints of vision loss in the left eye, which occurred one hour after hyaluronic acid filler injection for correction of detachment trough hollowness. In the ophthalmologic examination, relative afferent pupillary defect (RAPD) was positive...
